It’s June, and that means PEDALPALOOZA! Portland’s premier bike festival has been extended to three weeks this year, and with over 250 events on the calendar, there’s a lot for folks to do. Cycle Wild has a few events set for the next couple of weeks, and if you have the time, we’d LOVE to see you there!
Bike Camping 101
Back for our 4th year (we missed last year), the Pedalpalooza edition of BC101 is typically a big draw. This year, we’re holding the class on June 19th at 6:30pm at Colonel Summers Park (SE 20th Avenue and Belmont). We’ll be meeting on the west side of the park near the shelter with the restrooms. Come join us to learn more about camping by bike!
Bicycle Touring Workshop
This isn’t, strictly speaking, a Cycle Wild event, but it’s being put on by Cycle Wild board member Shawn Granton of the Urban Adventure League. Shawn completed a cross-country tour through the USA and Canada last year, so he’s got some awesome experience and helpful tips to share. Are you bored with the overnight trips, and want something more epic? Come to the Bike Touring Workshop! This workshop will be held June 11th at Velo Cult.
Midweek Bike Camping Trip
Shawn is also leading a mid-week S24O (sub-24 hour overnight) trip to Battleground Lake in Washington state on June 18th. Ride into the wilds of Clark County past the city of Battle Ground to a campground and lake in an old volcanic cinder cone. Shawn is an experienced group leader and his trips are always entertaining. Take the camping plunge and head for Battleground Lake State Park!
Bike Touring for Women Workshop
Esther Harlow, and Cycle Wild board member Erinne Goodell are presenting a workshop specifically for women on bike touring on June 20th at 6pm at the Portland Hawthorne Hostel. Both women are experienced ride leaders and tourers with amazing knowledge of bikes, camping, and combining the two. If you’re looking specifically for the female perspective on bike camping/touring, then this workshop is a great place to start! This event is only for women and trans- identified participants. If you do not fall into those two categories we invite you to come to Bike Camping 101 or Shawn’s Bike Touring Workshop. Thanks!
