Hey, everyone! THIS FRIDAY (August 3rd) is the deadline to register for the 2 annual trips. If you miss the deadline, you might still be able to come if we have enough campsites, but after this Friday there are no guarantees.
Trip A: The Oregon Coast (5 spots remaining) – August 11-18
367 miles, 20,000′ of elevation gain
Estimated cost of campsites: $30-50 per person (exact amount depends on number of participants)
Trip B: The Oregon Cascades (6 spots remaining) – August 19-26 Note: If you’re taking the train down to Eugene, get a train on Saturday the 18th – we are RIDING on the morning of Sunday the 19th
334 miles, 18,000′ of elevation gain
Estimated cost of campsites: $50-60 per person (exact amount depends on number of participants)
Additional costs: If you are riding only one of the two trips, you need to get an Amtrak ticket to or from Eugene, Oregon. $26 for a ticket, and $5 for a bike hook reservation (on Amtrak Cascades) or $20 for a bike box (on Coast Starlight or the Amtrak Thruway buses)
Train details:
Trip A: Train to Portland on August 19 – Take either Coast Starlight train #11 (2:25pm) or Amtrak Cascades train #507 (6:15pm). If you take Coast Starlight, you will need to box your bike.
Trip B: Train to Eugene on August 18 – Take either Amtrak Cascades train #500 (5:30am) or Coast Starlight train #14 (12:44pm). If you take Coast Starlight, you will need to box your bike.
Boxing bikes: Amtrak Cascades has 6 hooks in the baggage car. When all 6 are full, or if taking Coast Starlight, you will need to box your bike. Boxes are available from Amtrak for $20. Amtrak does not buy back the used boxes. When boxing your bike, you are required to remove the pedals and turn the handlebars sideways. This requires for most bikes a pedal wrench and an allen wrench. There is a bike shop in Eugene only 3 blocks from the Amtrak station where this can be done/undone, and we will likely have tools on-site at our campsite.
Additional train info: The campsite in Eugene is 30-40 riding time from the Amtrak station, so if you plan to take the 5:30am train to Portland, you’ll be getting up before 4am to pack and ride. The later Amtrak Cascades train on Sunday, August 19th has been canceled and replaced by bus service due to track work.
Contact info@cyclewild.org for additional information about either trip.
