Cycle Wild Annual Trips

For those who were waiting for the Cycle Wild annual trip details, here they are!

Trip “A”

367.4 miles and 20,772′ of elevation gain.

Trip A starts in Sellwood the morning of Saturday, August 11th.  It heads to the coast along Nestucca River Road and down the coast through Pacific City, Lincoln City, Newport, Waldport, Florence and Reedsport before heading inland.  You’ll see marvelous views of the Pacific Ocean, the Yaquina Bay bridge, and the Oregon Dunes National Scenic Area.  If you like beer, we’ll be hitting Pelican, Rogue, and Nikasi breweries along the way and ending the trip in Eugene.  Participants will travel home on Amtrak, or the bold can feed directly into trip B.

Dates: August 11-19 (8 days riding, 1 day on Amtrak)

Cost: The per-person cost of lodging is $30, collected in advance of the trip.  We’ll mostly be in low-cost state parks.  Each person is responsible for their own food, and for train transportation home. (http://www.amtrak.com/home)  You can expect a cost of $26 for an Amtrak ticket, plus $5 for your bike on Amtrak Cascades or $20 for a bike box if riding the Coast Starlight.  (Note: the train is popular, you should reserve a seat and bike space as soon as you can!) A typical budget for this trip would be $30 lodging + $135 food + $50 Amtrak = $215 (remember that you’d be spending money on food if you were at home – it’s roughly $80 plus food)

You MUST register to come on the trip, and there are only 8 slots available.  Click here for the link to register for the Cycle Wild 2012 Annual Trip A via Eventbrite.

Trip “B”

334.0 miles and 18,078′ of elevation gain.

Trip B starts in Eugene at Armitage County Park (about 5 miles north of town).  You’ll ride to Oakridge, mountain bike capital of Oregon, then along the scenic Aufderheide byway to Cougar Reservoir.  After a soak in Terwilliger hot springs, you’ll ride up and over McKenzie Pass on a low-traffic highway through lava fields and with gorgeous views of Mt. Washington and the Three Sisters.  After spending a night in Sisters, you’ll head up and over Santiam Pass to ride the West Cascades scenic byway to Detroit Lake, then west into the Willamette Valley to the tiny town of Lyons.  The final two days are through gorgeous farmland to Champoeg State Park and a return through Oregon City to Sellwood.  Participants must arrange transportation to Eugene for the start.  Again, we recommend Amtrak.

Dates: August 18-26 (1 day on Amtrak, 8 days riding)

Cost: The per-person cost of lodging is $50, collected in advance of the trip.  Campgrounds in the Cascades are pricier, so this is a higher-cost trip.  Total budget as above, plus another $20 for the difference in lodging.

You MUST register to come on the trip, and there are only 8 slots available.  Click here to register for the Cycle Wild 2012 Annual Trip B via Eventbrite.

IF YOU INTEND TO DO BOTH TRIPS, YOU MUST REGISTER FOR EACH TRIP INDIVIDUALLY

Payment in advance for either trip is REQUIRED.  you can pay either through Paypal on the Eventbrite site, or by mailing a check (instructions in the Eventbrite reservation system), or by giving cash payment to Matt Picio in advance of the trip.

It should be obvious, but this is NOT a beginner trip.  The annual trips are considered advanced bike camping trips – this *is* bicycle touring in every sense, completely self-supported.  Please do not register for the events if you aren’t able to complete a multi-day, 350 mile bike camping trip.

We hope you’ll be able to join us for one or both of these epic adventures!
